(English) This picture was taken in a refugee camp near Calcutta. This hospital has been built in a large storage house, the sick go their for health issue and in order to try to find some food. This mother and her daughter are refugees from Bangladesh. The picture is quite moving, the situation of the girl in underlined by the white drape in the background. While this situation is hard to look at, the gaze of the spectator is caught almost right away by the stare of the mother and her facial expression which shows both sadness and anger. The girl is paralyzed by her hunger and her face is full of pain, making it hard to look at her for a long time. Marilyn Silverstone is not easy on her spectator, she makes us look at the situation in which the women are, shooting them as naturally as can be and still keeping their dignity which is strongly present in the gaze of the mother. The photo is here to send a clear message, these people are in a situation which no humain should have to live.
(Français) Cette photo a été prise dans un camp de réfugiés à côté de Calcutta. Cet hôpital est un grand hangar, les malades y viennent pour avoir des soins et un rationnement. Cette mère et sa fille sont des réfugiés du Bangladesh. Cette photo très touchante par l’état de santé de la petite fille reste épurée par l’arrière plan de draps blancs. Pas de fioriture, le regard du spectateur est tout de suite accroché par le regard de la mère, l’on plonge dans ses yeux et son expression faciale pour y comprendre sa peine et sa colère. Enfin, la souffrance de la petite, qui ne peut que rester en état de végétation, se traduit aussi par son visage meurtri. La prise de vue est de face, directe et cadrée parfaitement pour qu’on soit à la hauteur de la mère, plongé dans ce hangar. La photo est ici utilisée pour passer un message clair, il fait l’état d’une situation humaine qu’on ne peut accepter.
