Garry Winogrand was a street photographer known for his portrayal of the United States in the mid-20th century. This untitled photo is often called “flip”.
This pictures was taken by Winogrand at the beggining of histoire career when hé work as a photo-reporter for local newspapers. While the picture was obviously taken in order to document about a social event which is not représentative of Winogrand later work, the way the picture is taken as to show the burlesque of the situation already gives us an idea of the artist’s skill.
